Whether you’re creating a custom sofa or headboard or specifying a lounge chair, we carry and represent some of the best and highest quality leathers in the industry. Leather is one of those durable upholstery options that only gets better with time…if it’s done right.
For our custom upholstered pieces from Steven Anthony we provide you with several different leather styles with varying textures and colorways.
Ordering products from Knoll opens up the collection of Spinneybeck leathers which contains hundreds of different options from sealed leathers to sueded varieties. Spinneybeck began as a Canadian company from Ontario that later moved its headquarters to New York state and continues to be a North American leader and supplier of upholstery leather.

**Fun Fact: ”Spinney,” the Old English word for woods, represents tannin, the ancient ingredient derived from wood bark, still used in leathermaking. “Beck,” the Viking word for brook, or stream, is the water component of leathermaking. Beck was given to the English language by the Vikings who overran the British Isles centuries ago.**
Companies like Herman Miller rely on their own private label leathers, as well as those from well-known leather manufacturer Edelman Leather. Edelman, with showrooms all over the US and representatives around the world, specializes in custom coloring, hand finishes and their line consists of more than 750 color ways and over 75 different types of leathers, all of which are GREENGUARD indoor air quality certified.

And last but not least, we have leathers from Cortina Leathers. Family-owned by a mother/daughter team, Cortina imports fine Italian leathers for the architectural, interior design and commercial markets in the Americas and all over the world. With over 50 different styles, Cortina produces high-quality and even has extensive custom capabilities that range from simple custom color to complex leathers involving multiple processes, including embossments, transfer prints, laser cutting and tipping.

Have you ever been online, in a store or even watching TV and seen a piece of upholstered furniture that drove your design senses crazy? Whether it was a great fabric, a bold leg design or other feature you just knew you had to have it! And then what happened? You did some shopping around and searching around but came up empty handed.
In that instance, Vastu loves to be able to provide completely personalized, handmade-to-order furniture. When Vastu co-owner Jason Claire returned from this year’s trip to the Salone del Mobile show in Milan, he had tufting on the brain. After seeing several vendors play around with this classic upholstery method he knew he needed something made for his home.
So he got in touch with Steven Anthony, our upholsterer out in Los Angeles, and this is what they came up with!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day
Green is an awesome color! It’s one of my personal favorites and I love to see it when the Vastu designers use it in their projects. For anybody else who loves the color, then St. Patrick’s Day is pretty much a day to color-overdose on it. New Wood Stains from Steven Anthony
Just one more choice to think about when designing your custom furniture from Vastu! We just received these new wood stain samples direct from Steven himself out in LA.
The colors/stains include (clockwise from top left):

Vastu co-owner Eric says “these new wood stains are a great option for when wood is a big part of the piece we’re creating. Like if a sofa has full wood trim or a chair has a highly visible wood base. I probably wouldn’t choose these stains for, say, a bed where the legs are recessed and hidden under it.”

And the best part is that these stains are still neutral enough to work with most color schemes while still making a statement (if that’s what you’re looking for). Stop by the store soon to check ‘em out!
The Sleeper Sofa
The sleeper sofa, love em or hate em they’re most definitely useful as they can make any space multi-functional. However, people don’t always find them to be comfortable or all that stylish, something that can be discerned by reading the comments section of a recent Apartment Therapy post on the same subject.
Frankie Sectional
A little known fact is that a majority of the custom hand-made sofas we carry can be made as sleepers. All it requires is that you choose a frame that has loose seat cushions (so that you’re able to remove them) and that you pick a size that meets the minimum size requirements (66″ W for a full and 78″ W for a queen, in most cases). And if you’re worried about being able to see the sleeper component at the bottom of the sofa when it’s not in use, then don’t! We increase the size of the lower portion of the sofa (the apron) to conceal everything.

The sleeper component consists of a 4″ innerspring mattress and a 4″ inflatable air mattress. That gives you 8 inches of mattress that prevents you from feeling a crossbar making it comfortable to sleep on.
Co-owner Eric Kole actually has a Metro Sleeper Sofa in his own home that’s used by friends and family when visiting.

The best part of being able to custom make sofas is that we have full control over the design of our furniture. If you want a sectional sofa with a sleeper inside, in a grey fabric with wood legs and tufting on the back…it’s totally doable. Just for you.
