Places to go | Folks to know – NYC Edition
To finish off New York week on Design Clique, here are a few of new designer, Krissy Stecyk’s, favorite places to go in New York City.
The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in Central Park. One of the most picturesque places that I’ve found in NYC is the run/walk trail around the reservoir in Central Park. I love getting up early to take a brisk, invigorating walk around the reservoir. The views of Manhattan are captivating while nature abounds. It is especially beautiful the few weeks in early spring when the cherry blossoms bloom! It is a great way to get some fresh air, some exercise, and to prepare yourself for the day ahead.

Well, what do you know – this ‘Places to go | Folks to know’ post is about food. Our neighbor, Cafe Saint-Ex, is one of our favorite lunch spots. And, it’s not just because they are just a few doors down – the food is really good! Cafe Saint-Ex is also a great destination for brunch, especially around this time of year because they have plenty of outdoor seating.
Staff favorites include the chicken salad sandwich and the sweet potato fries. Yum!

One of our favorite neighborhood eateries – Simply Home – has reinvented itself. Now DC Noodles, the newly designed restaurant offers a more casual dining experience, a new menu and more seating! With over 40 noodle dishes, DC Noodles is still looking to add more noodle combinations. Their noodle dishes are inspired by authentic Thai recipes. They say, “Thailand may not be known as ‘noodle country’ but when we think of food, we think noodles. Pad Thai anyone?”
As we consider it our duty to try all new restaurants, we are happy to report the DC Noodles is a delicious stop on U Street. If you were a fan of Simply Home, you will love DC Noodles.

Our favorite destination for cards is our 14th Street neighbor, Pulp. And it’s not just because they’re a few doors down from us. They have an amazing selection of cards for all occasions, from funny to inspirational to artistic. Whatever the event, you’ll be able to find the perfect card. You can also find some great gifts items as well – notecards, mugs, books, etc.
Pulp was opened in 2001 with the goal of entertaining customers and they have certainly accomplished it. If you have a sense of humor, stop by and check out the “Uncooked” cards located at the front of the store. You’ll get a good laugh. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by Pulp.

We love to eat. We enjoy everything, especially sweet treats. The team is always looking for an excuse to get cupcakes. Birthdays, a big project gets completed, a team member returns after a long vacation, it’s a Tuesday…
There are some great places to get cupcakes here in DC. One of our favorites is Georgetown Cupcake. Their cupcakes are DELICIOUS – baked on site daily. Some flavors are baked everyday and others are available on specific days of the week. Just check out their online cupcake schedule to make sure your favorite is available. And, they deliver! Gotta love it. The team’s favorite flavor- mocha. If you haven’t made it over to Georgetown Cupcake, it’s well worth the trip.

It can be difficult to find someone to trust with your thirty year old family photo or the artwork you picked up on a trip to Brazil. Here at Vastu we trust one person in particular with these kinds of valuable items and it’s Regina Miele. Regina is a custom framer who knows everything there is to know about framing – from the best materials to use to preserve your pieces to what frame finishes will bring your piece to life.
In addition to her amazing framing work, Regina is also a very talented painter. You can see her portfolio of work here. You can also visit her studio on Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. If you’d like to stop by during the week, Regina takes appointments Tues. thru Fri. between 11am and 6pm – just call 202-234-2550.

At Vastu, we are a team of foodies. And by foodies we mean we love to eat. When neighborhood restaurant and wine bar, Cork, first opened our staff members were some of the first to try it out – and it was great! Cork offers a number of delicious small plate options and an amazing selection of wine. They don’t take reservations, but you can call ahead to put your name on a waiting list. You may still have to wait when you arrive, but the dining experience is well worth it. Open for dinner, Cork has a fun crowd, the atmosphere is casual and the prices are reasonable - an all around good time. If you haven’t yet had a taste of Cork, give it a try.
