A Mid-Century Modern Color Palette
The folks over at Modern Capital posted a great link on their Facebook page today. Paint company California Paints have a feature on their website where they showcase various paint colors (both interior and exterior) according to time period in their 20th Century Colors of America.
If you head down to the 1940s to the 1960s you’ll find colors for, our favorite, mid-century modern!
Here’s what they had to say:
The post-World War II housing boom and the popularization of modern architecture brought bold colors in deep tones into popularity once again. Earth tones dominated exteriors, while interiors featured sophisticated, modulated neutral shades like bone, gray-beige, pearl gray, and taupe alongside saturated accents in fuchsia, teal, evergreen, charcoal, and chocolate with strong contrasts in chartreuse, tangerine, gold, and sulfur yellow.
Check out the colors below and some of the stories behind those individual colors.

“Designers, I need your advice. I’m expecting and it’s time to start getting the nursery together (yaaaaay!). My partner and I have decided NOT to find out the sex of the baby, so I’m having a really difficult time settling on a paint color for the walls. I know people tend to go with yellow or green colors because they’re supposed to be gender neutral, but I can’t seem to find anything in either color palette I like. Any other color suggestions?”

Flickr finds: Painted ceilings
Vastu designer and co-owner, Jason Claire, offered up some advice on painting your ceiling yesterday. If you think painting your ceiling is the way you want to go, here’s a little inspiration…
Painted ceilings… yay or nay?
The decision on whether or not to paint the ceiling in a room can be a tough one. The obvious question is to paint or not to paint, but then of course if you do decide to paint the question is what color? Should you go with something bold? Or just play it safe by sticking with the existing paint color? Vastu designer and co-owner Jason Claire offers his thoughts on painted ceilings.
• I’m a bit of a purist, so I tend to paint ceilings flat white in small rooms or open floor plans where there are no natural starts and stops to ceiling lines. You should use flat paint on a ceiling to hide imperfections that are easily seen when light reflects off of a ceiling. Only when your ceilings are PERFECT should they be painted in an eggshell finish or a paint with more gloss.

Flat and satin and semi, oh my!
When you head out to get paint you’ll find that there are a number of interior paint finish options out there. Flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. Here are some great guidelines from an articlebase.com article by the owner of Smoky Mountain Painting on when/where to use each finish…

Hello!
No picture or video from me - just a question for you. I saw the question about paint and a baby’s room a couple weeks ago, so I thought I’d ask you a paint question about a little girl’s room. I am in the process of re-doing my 7 year old daughter’s room and she really wants her room to be painted pink. I want her to be happy, but I’m not a big fan of big pink. Could you recommend a pink paint color that isn’t too “bubble gum” or “Pepto Bismol”? Something youthful, but not so bright and fun that in a couple years she won’t like it…
Thanks so much!
What do you think?
