“Please take a look at our courtyard. We have this long gray wall that is so ugly. With your experience, what do you think we should do to hide it? I was thinking long flower boxes and a bench or something. What do you think?”

This week’s Design Direction post is a before and after. Being able to see people achieve the look they want in their home after a little help from us is incredibly rewarding. We were sent some living room pictures back in January. This homeowner was looking for ways to make his space more cohesive. After getting some advice from Vastu interior designer, Jamie, the homeowner made a few updates and the place looks great! Before we reveal the after photos, here’s a look at the living area prior to submitting the design dilemma…
.MGX in Milan
Belgian lighting company, .MGX, had both customer favorites and new items on display this year at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, a furniture show in Milan, Italy. Vastu co-owners Jason Claire and Eric Kole snapped some photos of the .MGX booth while at the show. The lighting manfucturer had a field of tulip table lamps on display…
Lighting with exposed bulbs and wires… yay or nay?
Vastu co-owners Jason Claire and Eric Kole have been in Milan, Italy for the past few days at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, a HUGE furniture show. They’ve been sending us pictures of home furnishings all week, and a definite trend has emerged – lighting fixtures that have exposed bulbs and exposed (colorful) wires. What do you think about this trend… yay or nay?

“I just bought a home with a very tiny master bathroom. If being small isn’t enough to deal with, there’s an issue with the toilet being right at the doorway. Originally the door opened in towards the vanity, but prior owners removed the door and put up, of all things, a plastic accordion door. Another issue is the shower stall. First, it has no lighting. Previous owners took off the pivot door and replaced it with a shower curtain. As you reach in to turn on the water, you get soaked. I’m trying to find out what would be the best layout to utilize what little floorspace there is. My best idea for this space would be to replace the shower stall with bypass shower doors, replace the vanity with a smaller vanity that is 15″ or 18″ deep (need the storage space) and we really would like an elongated toilet, so one that takes up the least amount of floor space. Last, put in a pocket door. Other than the above, I really can’t come up with any other ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated!”

“Our house has a basement my husband calls his “man cave”. He is the one to spend the most time there, but occasionally the family and guests are down there to watch movies. He wants to decorate the room in the colors of his alma mater (forest green and gold) and his favorite football team (purple and gold). He’s adamant about the colors, but I don’t see how those colors could possibly work together. If no one ever went down there I wouldn’t care, but I still want to be able to bring friends to the basement and be proud of the decor… Any thoughts on how to make it work?”
