Vastu’s Herman Miller Favorites – The Eames Aluminum Group Chairs
Today’s Herman Miller Favorite is brought to you by Vastu designer, Ray Nguyen.
His pick is the Eames Aluminum Group chairs. What started out as a design challenge, the Aluminum Group chairs represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell when Charles and Ray Eames designed the chair with a cast aluminum frame that was meant to support a stretched synthetic mesh. Today, the chair can be upholstered with many choices of fabrics.
Here’s what Ray had to say:
“Sleek, sophisticated, comfortable, instantly recognizable and absolutely timeless. This iconic group of chairs by Charles and Ray Eames is utilized in commercial and residential applications all over the world. The broad range of upholstery materials and trim levels allows the chair to be customized to each interior. Gorgeous, supple leathers in several grades, technical, easy care meshes and contract quality fabrics are all available. This chair says “I am smart. I am successful. I am stylish.” And it does it for less than ten sessions with your shrink. Not bad for a chair designed in 1958.”
The Eames Aluminum Group chair comes in various office styles as well as a in a lounge and ottoman.

Vastu’s Herman Miller Favorites – The Noguchi Table
Today’s Herman Miller Favorite comes from one of Vastu’s designers and co-owners, Eric Kole.
Eric’s favorite is the Noguchi Table. Designed in the 1940s, the Noguchi table is made up of a wooden base composed of two identical curved wood pieces, with a heavy plate glass top. In 1947, the Herman Miller catalog described the table as “sculpture-for-use”.
Here’s what Eric had to say about the coffee table:
“While I love the table for its beauty and simplicity, and the fact that it is still considered a modern icon of design despite having been created over 60 years ago, it’s my favorite because of the designer: landscape architect Isamu Noguchi. I have long admired his works, particularly the outdoor sculptures and meditative gardens.”
“Several of his designs, like the table, are instantly recognizable of course, however it is the breadth of his work that I find most impressive: he designed lighting, sculpture, furniture, indoor and outdoor gardens, portrait busts and even theatre sets and costumes. The Noguchi Museum is well-worth a quick subway ride to Long Island City on your next trip to NYC!”

Vastu’s Herman Miller Favorites – The Eames Molded Plastic Chair
Today’s Herman Miller Favorite comes from one of Vastu’s designers, Sarita Peresada.
Sarita’s pick is the Eames Molded Plastic Chair. Designed by Ray and Charles Eames, these chairs were the first industrially manufactured plastic chairs. They exhibit clean, simple forms that are comfortable to sit in and today’s chairs have been updated with eco-friendly materials.
Here’s what Sarita had to say about them:
“They are super comfortable and work for so many different spaces. For example, they obviously make great dining chairs, but they also make great desk chairs and even side chairs in a small space. I love the fun color options (my favorite is the green) and the multiple base options, too. You can create so many different looks, it’s wonderful! I also love the durability of the plastic, there is no need to worry about dirt and stains because you can simply scrub them clean.”

Vastu’s Herman Miller Favorites – The Nelson Basic Cabinet series
In honor of our Herman Miller sale going on now (through the 12th), we decided to share with you all Vastu’s favorite Herman Miller pieces.
Today’s Herman Miller Favorite, the Nelson Basic Cabinet series, comes from Jason Claire, co-owner and designer.
Designed in 1946 by George Nelson, the Nelson Basic Cabinet series is a clean-lined, functional, and versatile modular storage system that adapts itself to various spaces without losing its classic form or function.
Here’s what Jason had to say:
“The George Nelson designed Nelson™ Basic Cabinet series is among my favorite Herman Miller Designs… They are timeless in style and are offered in numerous sizes and light wood finishes. They can be used as dressers, lined up side-by-side as a dining room sideboard, and the smaller ones can be used as bedside tables and small media cabinets. In urban interior design, I love when pieces are multi-functional. You’ll have them forever, and you can’t beat the prices for iconic modern designs.”
