“I have a cape cod contemporary two story on the water with large windows facing east. We have a beautiful whitewashed cedar ceiling. The floor has stark white 10″ floor tiles that are very hard to keep clean. I’d like to replace it with porcelain floor planking that looks like wood. I’m stuck trying to decide on the color for the floor. There are so many options. By the way, the doors are all whitewashed with a bright white wood trim. My style is classic with a bit of contemporary thrown in. We are planning on a redo of the fireplace as well as well as the kitchen.
Here is a summary of my decorating challenges:
- What color floor planking (porcelain) to put on the floor.
- What color to paint the new wood around our new fireplace.
- The kitchen cabinets are white washed. I’m selecting white painted ones. What color granite – light or dark for more or less of a contrast?
- The wood doors are all white washed too. As is the railing going up the stairs. Do I paint the railing white or?
- Do I paint the walls a lighter or darker color?

“After purchasing my first condo, I was eager to get my new place furnished right away. I mistakenly thought that I knew what I wanted, and that I could figure out the best options on my own. In fact, I was convinced that I could purchase everything that I needed on the internet. Boy was I wrong.
After stumbling into Vastu and talking to a designer for only a few minutes, I realized that I was way out of my league. They came up with ideas for maximizing space in my small condo that I never would have (or could have) thought of in a million years. They patiently worked with me in selecting items that I loved, but that also fit within the general scheme that was so carefully mapped out. Importantly, the folks at Vastu were sensitive to, and even enjoyed the challenge of, working within the bounds of my limited spending abilities.
Since my purchases at Vastu I have gotten follow up e-mails and phone calls making sure that I’m happy with my decisions. They have conveyed to me additional ideas for accessories and designs. Store owners Eric and Jason have even given me guidance on artwork that I’m considering for my walls. It is extremely rare to encounter a business whose owners and salespeople truly care about your happiness with the products they sold you, long after your credit card has been swiped. My experience with Vastu has reminded me that the simplicity of purchasing items on the internet cannot compare to the value one receives from in-store, real life, personal relationships. Years from now, when it’s time for me to move into a new or bigger place, there’s no question that I will have the people at Vastu take care of all my home furnishing and design needs.”
