Vastu is currently presenting work by Brian Petro that was made within the last five months. This body of work stems from the lessons learned from Sammy Hodis, his 14 year observance of public and private art collections, carpentry skills from his father, and utilizing one of his favorite pastimes – dumpster diving in New York City. New art exhibit: Allen Levy and Brian Petro
Allen Levy creates paintings that draw you in to take a closer look. At first glance, they appear calm, peaceful and harmonious but upon closer review, hidden under each layer he applies, is a detailed and complex story. There is intense interplay between organic flow and structured ideas and the limitless possibilities that lie between. The compositions often conjure up a memory of the landscape – a sunset, the weather or even a season, but all are subject to individual interpretation.

And the “I want art!” winner is…
At last night’s event, party goers had a chance to win some original art. Lindsey gets to take home “Animal Crackers.32″ an original photographic thermal polymer transfer by Brian Petro. A piece of Brian’s like this typically goes for around $1,200.
Congrats again Lindsey!

Four weeks remain in our current art show here at Vastu. If you haven’t been by, take a few moments to stop in. Both artists are presenting fresh artwork – all were completed within 2 months of the show installation. Here is a statement on Brian Petro’s collection of work.

Inspired by the “green” lifestyle mantra of recycling materials, Brian Petro utilizes cast-off objects as the materials for his new series. Through dumpster diving, alley foraging, and street searching, Brian found linoleum tiles and nails in Brazil, and wooden frames in the streets of the Lower East Side in New York City. Layering them with paint, varnish and scribe marks, the final products are a tribute to objects that are otherwise considered trash.

New art exhibition: Now thru August 3
Vastu is excited to welcome two artists from the Northeast for our current exhibition.

Vastu’s art director, Brian Petro, is back for another show. Brian’s new work is inspired by a homeless man he saw when he was 9 hauling trash by hand, his father who taught him carpentry and other hands-on life skills, and his grandfather who had a dirt floor workshop in a house that he built himself. Brian uses the many lessons learned over his years to use cast-off materials to show beauty in objects that most people hope go directly into a landfill.
