Over the weekend we had a new art exhibit go up called “City of Trees: The Natural Monuments of Washington DC” from DC-based photographer Allen Russ.

Allen Russ on the series:

“This is an ongoing book project of landscape photography focusing on the trees of Washington DC. I am working on this project in conjunction with the Trust for the National Mall. For the next several years, I will be adding photographs as I create them.”

As you may recall, Allen has exhibited at Vastu before back in 2010 as part of a $500 or Less art show and was even interviewed, at the time, by Cecile Oreste from Borderstan.

About his work:

“I would characterize my work as equal parts science and art. Often when I conceive of a photograph, so much of my intent is to capture some biological, chemical and physical symptom of the effects of time on my subject as well as the geometry of the subject and the scene of which it is a part.

It is often the case that I manufacture or manipulate my subject over weeks and months. Treating it chemically or simply leaving it to be affected by weathering. Although, many of my subjects are man-made relics of the industrial era, I am primarily photographing nature.

I am trying to capture not just the symptoms of time, but the actual passage of it. This means that I spend the time around many of my photographs under long exposure conditions trying to contain 30+ minutes on a single piece of film.”

The District by The JBG Companies and Grosvenor

And when I say several, it’s literal. From above Florida Avenue to south of Rhode Island Avenue (on 14th), there are a total of 10 residential projects that are in the final planning stages or are under construction. These are a mix of rental buildings and condominiums and are projected to bring about 1150 units to the area. Some commentators on the post did some quick calculations based on Census data and figured that we’ll be seeing a 5-10% population increase once these are all done and full.

As Bob Dylan once wrote, and as many of or customers like to exclaim, “The times they are a-changin’.” Pretty soon, we’ll walk outside and not even recognize the 14th Street that we know and love today.

If you’re anything like me you haven’t even started your holiday shopping and probably are just now starting to think about it. As long as you don’t put it off until the day before (like I did last year), you should be okay.

If you are looking now, however, we just got a new product in that would make a great gift. Straight out of Edmonton, Alberta Canada come the Log Bowls!

From the Loyal Loot Collective:

“Log Bowls combine the incomparable beauty of trees in their natural state with a high-gloss vibrant finish. Each bowl is handmade using only locally reclaimed trees of all varieties (fallen or cut down due to infrastructure, re-landscaping, droughts, or stormy weather). The trees are hand selected, gathered, turned and finished by Loyal Loot Collective and local crafts people. Log Bowls come in a large variety of colors and are completed by hand with a water-based, furniture grade finish.”

They come in various diameters, heights and colors and start at $125. Stop by Vastu and check ‘em out!
