Trends from Milan 2012 – Lounge Chairs & Cocktail Tables
About a month ago, Vastu co-owners Eric Kole and Jason Claire had the pleasure of attending the 2012 Salone Internazionale del Mobile furniture fair in Milan. They came back with great ideas, loads of inspiration and possibly even some new products for Vastu. The other thing they brought with them was a good understanding of some trends being established at an international level.
Over the next few days, I’ll go over some of those trends (along with gorgeous photos from the shows) so you can get some inspiration and maybe even introduce a few of those concepts in your own home designs.
Today’s trend from Milan is a two for one deal.
1) Low, Lightweight Lounge Chairs
Some Eric and Jason noticed a lot of was the presence of low-profile, lightweight lounge chairs. Materials like molded plywood, lightweight metals, and leather really helped give these chair a sophisticated look and feel, without adding bulk or (too much) height.

This chair even looks inspired by an Eames favorite of ours…
Where can you find this trend in the showroom? The Krusin Lounge Chair from Knoll.

2) Collage of Cocktail Tables
A surprising trend that Jason and Eric observed was in the staging of living spaces and their cocktail or coffee tables. Instead of one piece, many furniture design companies were clustering several and mixing surfaces, textures, materials, heights and form.
The photo above has a rectangular marble table, a squre wood top table and two square leather cube ottomans. It’s like an advanced and daring version of this cocktail table grouping using Saarinen Tables.
