The Modern DIY Art Shelf
While checking email and catching up on the blogs I follow I found this great post on HGTV’s blog on How to Build A Modern Art Shelf. I love DIY projects, and this one looked especially easy. When I scrolled down to the final picture below, however, something just seemed off to me.

So I posed a question to the design team here at Vastu: “Is this shelf too high to really display art? Or is the height appropriate for the kinds of pieces the blogger chose to put up?”
Here’s what they had to say…
Vastu and HGTV
You may have read in a local Virginia blog recently that Vastu co-owner Eric Kole has participated in filming a new show for HGTV called Showhouse Showdown!
We’re definitely excited to be a part of this and can’t wait to share more details with you, so stay tuned to the blog in the coming weeks and, as always, thank you for being supporters of Vastu!
We’re Loving the Rincon Bates House

DC Metrocentric featured this recently renovated Capital Hill row house on their blog a couple of days ago and we are LOVING not only the fresh, contemporary style of the interiors (done by Studio27Architecture), but also the mid-century modern stylings of the furnishings within. This was all done while preserving the beautiful 1906 facade of the house.

Eames Finds at the National Building Museum Shop
While surfing the web, I came across the National Building Museum’s website. More specifically, I came across the National Building Museum’s online store. As I perused their items I discovered a section titled “Featured Designers”. Upon clicking the link, I spotted a pair of names we’re very familiar with here at Vastu: Charles and Ray Eames.
Their offering isn’t that large, but the things they do have would make great gifts for the mid-century modern design enthusiast in your life.
Like this item below:
This replica of the Eames Molded Plastic Chair is 3″ x 5.3″ x 3.3″. It’s mini and would definitely bring some whimsy to a desktop or side table.
To see the rest of the Eames-inspired products the National Building Museum sells, just head to their online store here. And don’t forget, as an authorized Herman Miller retailer, we carry a full line of authentic Eames-designed furniture.
Keepin’ It Cool
With heat advisories being thrown around left and right, we figured we’d showcase some pieces that just brought to mind cooler times. Think light woods, open and slatted construction, and glass. And remember during the next couple of days, stay in air-conditioned areas and drink plenty of fluids.
The Sayl Chair Has Arrived!
Back in June we gave you a sneak peek at the amazing Sayl chair designed by Yves Behar. Well our showroom floor model has arrived and we love it! Extremely comfortable, the Sayl can be adjusted to fit your body and sitting style with fully adjustable arms, seat height and tilt stop control.
Come by Vastu and give it a spin!
Designer Spotlight: Yves Béhar
Yves Béhar (1967-Present)
Birthplace: Switzerland
Herman Miller Products: Leaf Personal Light, Ardea Personal Light, SAYL Work Chair
Born to a German mother and Turkish father, this Swiss-born industrial designer studied at the Art Center College of Design in California.
For a relatively young designer, he has had a remarkable career. A graduate of the Art Center College of Design, he started out working with high tech Silicon Valley clients such as Apple and Hewlett Packard, eventually gravitating into the sport, apparel, technology and furniture arenas.
His collaboration with Herman Miller came about through one such conversation. An admirer of Charles and Ray Eames, Béhar decided he wanted to do something for the company himself. “Design is very much at the center of Herman Miller’s culture,” he says. “So one day I just picked up the phone, called them, and said, ‘Let’s work together.’”
Four years later, Herman Miller introduced his two brilliantly innovative lighting products, Leaf and Ardea.

The Coffee Table Conundrum
So the other day as I was reading up on the various blogs I follow, I came across this post about coffee tables on Apartment Therapy. In it, they posed the question “What’s On Your Coffee Table?”
That got me thinking, is there really a right and wrong way to decorate your own coffee table? Or do you even need to?
Read below to find out what Sarita Peresada, one of our designers, had to say.
