How Do You Vastu 2

This How Do You Vastu? entry was sent in by Jeni Heninger, a MFA candidate of interior design at GWU.  Jeni used bright pops of color and pattern in her walls and flooring to give her space energy and a sense of whimsy.  Mixing patterns and colors like this is daring, but Jeni did it quite effortlessly by pairing them with classic, simple pieces with clean lines, such as the Isaac Sofa and the Knoll D’Urso Swivel chair. Thank you Jeni for showing us How You Vastu!

Maharam: Repeat that

December 14, 2010 · Posted in Upholstery fabrics, Window Treatments · Comment

The beauty of some of Maharam’s textiles are their bold patterns with large repeats. Not sure what a repeat is? The “repeat” of a pattern is the distance between any given point in a design to where that exact point is repeated again. Fabric can have both a vertical and horizontal repeat.

Here are a few of our favorites…

bad art: {iconografitti} by Hans Kline

December 13, 2010 · Posted in Artists, Places to go in DC · Comment

One of the first iconic brands that came to the mind of Hans Kline, as he sketched for his bad art : { iconografitti } show, seemed to be an obvious choice: Chanel. The perfect CC logo and the simple lines of the classic perfume bottle are both able to instill traditional ideas of glamor while having a certain street sensibility to still be cool.

The artist also plays with the concept of brand and recognition by frequently replacing the ‘e’ in Chanel with an ‘s’, creating a “Hans” in the middle of brand while most viewers never notice the trick of the eye.

The work of Hans Kline will be showing here at Vastu now through January 16th.  Stop by any time during store hours to see his amazing work.

How Do You Vastu 4

This How Do You Vastu? entry was sent in by Sara Zoumbaris, a first year interior design student at GWU. Sara has used some of Vastu’s classic bedroom furniture pieces and has mixed them with a bold rug, a giraffe wall graphic, and some industrial lighting to create a beautiful bedroom with a hint of exotic flair. The brown earth tones mixed with the subtle pops of blue and green make the design feel serene and relaxing… what more could a person ask for in a bedroom!? Thank you Sara for showing us How You Vastu!

Pantone’s 2011 Color of the Year

December 9, 2010 · Posted in Interior design trends · 1 Comment

Pantone has announced the 2011 Color of the Year – Honeysuckle.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute® had this to say about the color…

In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues. Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother color red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum.  The intensity of this festive reddish pink allures and engages. In fact, this color, not the sweet fragrance of the flower blossoms for which it was named, is what attracts hummingbirds to nectar. Honeysuckle may also bring a wave of nostalgia for its associated delicious scent reminiscent of the carefree days of spring and summer.

So, what do you think about the 2011 Color of the Year?
