Do you have a challenging space or need some design guidance? Design Direction is a chance for you to submit photos or videos of your design challenge(s) and a Vastu interior designer will provide you with some help. Every Wednesday we will feature one reader’s submission.

“Please take a look at our courtyard. We have this long gray wall that is so ugly. With your experience, what do you think we should do to hide it? I was thinking long flower boxes and a bench or something. What do you think?”

Jason says…

Your idea is a good one. I would recommend long, deep flower boxes – maybe three each at three feet wide. They need to be deep so that you’re not constantly watering. I would plant both a climbing ivy that will attach itself to the concrete (you need to just train it by cutting it when it reaches the top edge) and something low and flowering like impatiens if it’s a sunny location. Your local nursery can help with specific plant species. Then it would be cool to put an aluminum bench or some stools in front of that. These aluminum ones are super durable and can be outside 12 months per year. And they’re lightweight so you can move them around if you’re entertaining outside. Good luck!
