Bigger, harder, better, faster, stronger, more production, more consumption and even more waste: extreme information overload and material excess… Technology promotes this rush, the idea that everyone needs to be constantly in a rush. In a world fast becoming more virtual and transient with each hour, minute and second, I believe in the ever-more importance of the physical. The ‘object’ as a marker of time: a reminder of ourselves, of our own physicality, temporality and transitory nature of existence. While we learn to connect and re-connect in new and different [electronic] ways, hopefully we can remember to slow down a bit, as well…

“My Master bedroom has two windows and a King size bed in the middle. Unfortunately, the nightstands are directly underneath these 2 windows. Is it customary to have bedside lamps on these nightstands when the window is right there? They are tall narrow windows.”

This time last year the National Archives was preparing to mark the 75th Anniversary of its John Russell Pope-designed Washington headquarters on Pennsylvania Avenue. To get the structure suited for celebration, scaffolding was quickly erected so crews could clean and re-point columns and the remarkable sculpture in it’s pediments.
Guest post: Modern homes in DC
Today’s post comes from mid-century modern enthusiast and D.C.-area Realtor Michael Shapiro. Michael works diligently to share his knowledge of local mid-century modern and modern homes, and to help support the preservation of mid-century modern architecture in the nation’s capital. He is also the mastermind behind the blog, Modern Capital, which is full of great information on mid-century modern real estate, design and events.

D.C. and the surrounding suburbs is a traditional place with very few mid-century modern homes. Right? That’s the conventional wisdom I hear from many people I talk to, including many fellow real estate agents, when I tell them about all the communities I have featured on my blog, Modern Capital. While the D.C. area may be dominated by older, traditional homes and newer McMansions, if you scratch beneath the surface and explore a bit you can find a world of interesting mid-century modern neighborhoods across our area. Mid-century modern furniture
Considered a very important design movement, mid-century modern furniture re-emerged as a coveted design aesthetic about 10 years ago and has continued to gain popularity over the years. The clean lines and organic shapes characteristic of items designed during this era work incredibly well with more modern furnishings. Our interior design clients often ask about iconic mid-twentieth century pieces such as the Saarinen Womb chair or Tulip table.
Mid-century Modern Week
We’ve decided to dedicate this week’s post to mid-century modern design. As a proud Knoll retailer, we have the opportunity to experience mid-century design on a daily basis and we’d like to put a little spotlight on (what we consider to be) such an important part of the design industry.
