“Hi. I live in a small one bedroom condo (600 sq ft) in Arlington. The building is very new, but the living room is small. I have a round glass table table and two custom chairs in the dining area, an Italian leather sofa and a very modern leather chair. I bought a media unit for the TV and to use as storage for books, files, etc., however I find the unit to be too big for the space. The sofa now seems too dark for the room and there is a bit too much leather. Any ideas? Many thanks!”
First off, though not huge, you have a great space. The floors are gorgeous! I think the thing with this space is that it lacks a sense of balance. It seems as though you wanted to create an eclectic space, but you’re not 100% satisfied with your execution. Here are a few tips on how to accomplish the look that you want…
- All the pieces in your room don’t have to match in order to create a space that’s uniform and balance. The sofa is the biggest and darkest piece in the room therefore it might be nice to soften it up with two accent pillows done in a fun fabric that will tie in the color of the dining chairs and side chair. Also, an area rug larger than your existing rug in a color that’s a few shades lighter than the one pictured would help take some of the weight off of the black sofa; this way the room won’t feel so heavy.
- I think it’s great that you introduced a little curve in the room with the round dining table. Now you might want to invest in a round side table to nestle beside the sofa in place of the one you have there now. Doing this will bring a little consistency in the space as well as break up some of the rectangular shapes in the room. The side table doesn’t have to match the dining table as long as its round, but I would recommend something with glass or metal finish.
- I agree with you that the size of this space could probably use one less leather piece, but you could always tuck a small kidney pillow in the seat of the chair thus minimizing the look of too much leather in the room.
- And I agree with you that your media stand is too large for this space. The piece would work well as a sideboard in a dining room. I would recommend a media credenza that’s no higher than 24 inches with an espresso (dark brown) finish.
Overall, I would suggest purchasing another area rug, side table, two accent pillows for the sofa, one small kidney pillow for the side chair, and smaller scale media stand for your television.
What do you think?
