Shop Local! Support the 3/50 Project

December 14, 2009 · Posted in Places to go in DC

The 3/50 Project is a concept that was born in March of this year.  For more on the story behind the project and the individual driving force behind the movement, click here.

The call to action is simple.  Select three independently owned businesses you’d be disappointed to see go and spend $50 at each store every month.

If half of the employed population did this, it would generate $42 billion in revenue.  Another interesting fact about supporting local, independent businesses – for every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 returns to the community (through taxes, payroll and other expenditures).  When that amount is spent at a national chain, only $43 stays in the community.

The 3/50 Project encourages all of us to do our part to try and sustain our local economy.  So, we wanna know – which three local businesses would you hate to see go?
