Wyzen-what?

A question Vastu designers are often asked about is faric durability.  With a glance at the fabric contents and cleaning code they can offer an answer.  They may also mention that the fabric has a 62,000 double rub Wyzenbeek method rating.  Most people then respond “wyzen-what?”

So here’s the deal… The Wyzenbeek method is a way to measure the abrasion resistance of fabrics (or how long it takes to break down).  A machine applies 2lbs of pressure and 6lbs of tension to a sample of fabric.  Then the textile is rubbed back and forth with an abradant until the fabric shows noticeable wear.  The number of rubs it took to create wear on the fabric is the Wyzenbeek method rating or the number of double rubs.  15,000 double rubs is considered appropriate for residential furniture use and 30,000 double rubs is considered durable enough for commercial environments.  There are a number of textiles here in the showroom with a 50,000+ double rub rating.

So, if you’re in the market for upholstery and you have access to the textile’s double rub or Wyzenbeek method rating you’ll have some insight into just how durable it is!
