Do you have a challenging space or need some design guidance? Design Direction is a chance for you to submit photos or videos of your design challenge(s) and a Vastu interior designer will provide you with some help. Every Wednesday we will feature one reader’s submission.

“Hello Vastu Team!  I recently took some dining room chairs off my mother’s hands.  I’d like to re-cover the seat cushions, but I’m not sure what to look for in a new fabric.  Please help!”

Here’s what Jason thinks…

Great question! When selecting a textile to give a piece of furniture a fresh look, be sure you select an upholstery weight fabric. Unlike the fabric used for clothing, window treatments, or table linens, upholstery grade fabrics are heavy duty enough to withstand long-term wear and tear on seating surfaces. From a design perspective, be mindful of whether the fabric is a solid or a pattern and how that will look on your particular chair. If you are upholstering only a seat, then perhaps a solid or textured fabric would work better than a large pattern for instance. For something a little different, if the chair has an upholstered back, then you could do one fabric on the front and another on the back (something like our Lolita Chair). Please send us a photo when you’re done with your project. Thanks!
