“I have this beautiful blue Pierre Paulin ribbon chair in my living room with more traditional desks and bookcases. I’m in search of a large sofa and two chairs, the sofa opposite the ivory brick fireplace and the two chairs in front of it. I have ivory silk drapes and tan (sort of grasscloth) wallpaper. I’m stuck for both color choices and styles. Would so appreciate your advice and the advice of your readers. Thanks!”
Here’s what Sarita thinks…
I think the way to make this room work together is to choose a transitional sofa that works with the more traditional desk and tables and also with the very modern Ribbon chair. A nice, tailored and streamlined sofa like the Steven Anthony Hugo sofa would be perfect. The clean lines of the Hugo sofa give it a modern look, but it is a classic shape that mixes well with both traditional and modern styles. As for the other two chairs to go in front of the fireplace, I think a more traditional style will work nicely in this room. These two chairs should be somewhat simple because the Ribbon chair is the star of the room already and you don’t want the new pieces to compete with it; what you want is a chair that will complement it. I like the Zoe chair; it is simple and graceful with beautiful curved lines that complement the Ribbon chair perfectly.
As for upholstery color selections, your best bet is to keep the sofa in a neutral tone that works with your existing wallcovering. A nice cream or soft beige would work, or even a light brown. For the two side chairs, I would go a little darker or lighter than the sofa, but still in a neutral fabric, maybe something with a tone-on-tone pattern to add interest, or something with a bit of blue in the pattern. Also, I would add some decorative throw pillows to the sofa with a pattern that incorporates a shade of blue similar to the Ribbon chair to tie it all together.

What a great challenge! I agree w/ Serita, although I feel as though the ribbon chair needs something even more contemporary to balance the modern/traditional combo in the room.
What about Steven Anthony’s Soho Barrel chairs in white leather? http://tinyurl.com/yl6mzt7
And maybe Roman shades instead of the drapes (move them to a different room – don’t get rid of them). To me, those pretty drapes are keeping the room anchored in tradition rather than mixing it w/ contemporary.
Great challenge, and great solution! Thanks for a great post.
