Do you have a challenging space or need some design guidance? Design Direction is a chance for you to submit photos or videos of your design challenge(s) and a Vastu interior designer will provide you with some help. Every Wednesday we will feature one reader’s submission.

Hey!  I keep seeing bird cages being used as decor everywhere.  I snapped this pic at a DC restaurant.  I think it’s an interesting idea I want to incorporate into my own apartment, but I’m not sure how.  I mean, is there a lot I should be thinking about or can I just by a cage and kind of put it anywhere?

What do you think?

    Hello!

I love the idea of including a birdcage as decoration in a home. I would first and foremost suggest shopping around for the perfect piece, consider checking out flea markets or thrift stores and remember to be patient – that unique piece that is perfect for your space is out there somewhere! I would recommend looking for unique sizes, shapes or colors when selecting a birdcage to be used as decoration…you want to be careful to avoid a functional looking birdcage that might end up looking like your pet bird flew the coop! A tall narrow cage would be perfect on the floor in a corner. A medium height, narrow cage would look great on a stool. A smaller cage would look neat on the corner of a coffee table or kitchen counter. A short, narrow, long cage (perhaps filled with small potted plants) would be perfect as a dining table centerpiece on a rectangular table. Hanging a cage might be too expected and therefore, not lend itself well for decoration. Consider spray painting a cage to add a pop of color, or place a candle in the cage for ambiance (just be careful that it won’t burn the birdcage or cause a fire).

One of Vastu’s vendors offers some other unique decoration ideas such as fish basket lanterns and miniature greenhouses.

My most important advice is to have fun with the decorating process and find pieces that really speak to you and reflect your personality and taste!
