…update your pillows!  Pillows may be a small decor item, but updating them can make a big difference if you’re in need of a design update.  To spice up a living room, study or bedroom, you can recover your existing throw pillows with fun, new fabrics, purchase brand new pillows fro your favorite home furnishings store, or have custom pillows made.  A small project like this is a great way to infuse your existing palette with new colors and patterns.

Midcity Caffe recently opened up its doors (above Miss Pixie’s Furnishings and Whatnot) and the reviews so far have been pretty good.  Caffe hours are greatfor an early morning run or afternoon snack, especially if you work in the neighborhood.  You can also stop by with your laptop and get some work (or non-work) done since they offer complimentary WIFI.  The 50s era diner design is charming and works well for the space.  As for the food and drink, we’ve heard only good things.  Personally we’ve had the black citrus iced tea and whole wheat bagels, both delicious!

If you haven’t been, definitely give it a try!

Bringing the outside in pt. 4: moss

August 25, 2009 · Posted in Home decor · Comment
If you don’t exactly have a green thumb, a moss plant could be the perfect answer to bring a little of the outside in. Though moss is typically a plant that thrives in damp, dark places, designers have been using moss in their design schemes to infuse life into rooms. As long as the moss is kept out of the window and moistened every once and a while, it can thrive in almost any space. Another popular approach is to dry the moss and no maintenance is required at all.

Check out this post from Martha Stewart.  She suggests going to your local florist and purchasing cushion moss.  The cushion moss can then take the form of whatever you’d like it to.  She recommends using a wire mesh to shape a surface for the moss to grow.

So, what do you think about moss as an indoor decor element?

Sit the bench…

If you’re tired of the same old approach to decorating your eat-in space, try replacing a few chairs with a bench.  This option is especially ideal for a dining area that’s high on style but low on space.  A bench can be fully concealed under a dining table to maximize floor space in high traffic areas.  If you’re not squeezing by your dining chairs, and you’re just looking for something unique, using bench seating is still a great option.

Artist Statement: Maryanne Pollock

August 18, 2009 · Posted in Artists · Comment

Maryanne Pollock is currently showing here at Vastu.  Here is a statement regarding her work.  It will be on display now through October 4th.

Expressive layering of sand, sumi ink and paint evoke ephemeral micro and macrocosmic worlds in Maryanne Pollock’s latest show at Vastu. Intricate brain wave patterns, aerial views of deserts and cityscapes are alluded to and ultimately imbued with a luminous palette. Plein air studies of Cairo, Istanbul, Paris, Washington, Utah and Rehoboth Beach inform her paintings. These boldly abstract inner-landscapes are simultaneously energetic and serene with pure transcendent color.

A graduate of Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and school in Rome, Italy, Pollock also studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and has done graduate work at American University. Her recent exhibition titled, “Human Grid” was in Paris, France. She has exhibited widely with shows in Basel, Switzerland, Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt and in the USA. Her work was included in the State Department’s Arts in Embassies Program. This is her second show with Vastu.
