Artist Statement: Shawna Cross

June 30, 2009 · Posted in Artists · 4 Comments

Four weeks remain in our current art show here at Vastu. If you haven’t been by, take a few moments to stop in. Both artists are presenting fresh artwork – all were completed within 2 months of the show installation.  Here is a statement on Shawna Cross’ collection of work.

(Pray For Building (lover letter for ourselves))

These paintings are made of desire, wonder, wander lust, projected dreams, actual disappointments, broken hearts, and moments of pure bliss and hope.  They juxtapose everyday realities with the corresponding daydreams that overlap ones physical eye with the eye of the imagination. Felt moments become physical realities as the psychology of color combines with the ability of form to stir the senses; each painting transforms to become the expression that verbal communication falls short of conveying. Each painting, therefore, is a journey in and outside of the soul, reflecting the balance of what has been, what is, and what is yet to be-a visual reminder of the beauty of human experience.

(Mute to Our Own Desires (hushed stories and sincere promises))

Artist Statement: Brian Petro

(yellow/blue)

Inspired by the “green” lifestyle mantra of recycling materials, Brian Petro utilizes cast-off objects as the materials for his new series. Through dumpster diving, alley foraging, and street searching, Brian found linoleum tiles and nails in Brazil, and wooden frames in the streets of the Lower East Side in New York City. Layering them with paint, varnish and scribe marks, the final products are a tribute to objects that are otherwise considered trash.

The truth about veneer

June 26, 2009 · Posted in Dining room furniture · 1 Comment

There is a big difference in the quality of furniture based on how it is made and what it is made of, particularly with wood furniture. There are two types of wood furniture, solid wood and wood veneer.  The debate about which is better has been going on for some time now, especially because of the bad rap veneers have gotten in the past.  Both veneers and solid wood are great materials to use for furniture, but we’d like to set the record straight on veneers.

Would a tax credit fire you up?

June 25, 2009 · Posted in Eco-friendly design ideas, Living room furniture · 1 Comment

In February 2009, President Obama announced there would be a tax credit available for the purchase of energy efficient fixtures for all non-business properties. Under this “Recovery and Reinvestment Act” the purchase of an EcoSmart fireplace qualifies buyers for a 30% tax credit (up to $1,500).  The innovative and unique ranges also fulfills the cutting edge design enthusiast in all of us.

The EcoSmart ranges are flueless units that burn on clean, natural denatured ethanol (alcohol).  The fireplace below happens to be freestanding.

Have a traditional fireplace? No problem, EcoSmart has also developed a line of ranges that can be retrofitted into almost any existing fireplace as well as an array of artistically inspired pieces.  Don’t just take my word for it, stop into our showroom and have a look.
