Design Direction

Do you have a challenging space or need some design guidance? Design Direction is a chance for you to submit photos or videos of your design challenge(s) and a Vastu interior designer will provide you with some help. Every Wednesday we will feature one reader’s submission.

What are the “rules” regarding area rug size?  Does the furniture have to be on the rug completely? Just the front legs of the sofa or chair?  I have selected the sofa and chairs for the living area of the living/dining room in my condo and I’m trying to figure out what size rug I need.

Thanks!

Great question! There are no hard and fast rules on sizes and furniture placement when it comes to area rugs. What you want is for the rug to define the seating area that you are arranging. If all of the furniture fits completely on the rug, that is fine, and if only the front legs fit on the rug, that is also fine. You do need to be careful about keeping the furniture balanced, however. One chair leg on a rug will throw off the balance and make a chair wobbly, but if two of the front legs are on the rug, it should be fine. Also consider any side or small tables that you may want to place on the perimeter of the seating area. Tables do not work as well half-on and half-off of a rug as chairs and sofas do because tables need to be level and seating can be on a slight tilt without any issue. One other thing to consider is the traffic flow of the space. If there is a walkway around the seating arrangement, it is usually best to choose a rug that won’t spill over into the walkway. This will help to keep the rug looking its best, because it won’t be subjected to heavy traffic. It will also help to define the seating area and the walkway as two separate spaces.
