Do you have a challenging space or need some design guidance? Design Direction is a chance for you to submit photos or videos of your design challenge(s) and a Vastu interior designer will provide you with some help. Every Wednesday we will feature one reader’s submission.

Designers!

I need your help.  Don’t have a photo to send – just need some advice.  I’m planning on re-doing my living room space.  Furniture, art, accessories – it’s all going.  I recently fell in love with an amazing piece of art.  I desperately want to buy the piece and design the room around it.  My partner says that buying art first and then picking out furniture is completely backwards.  But it’s a one-of-a-kind original.  What if someone else buys the art I love while I’m out picking some sofa.

Please help us settle this debate!

This debate can be argued from two perspectives depending on the functionality, intended purpose, and/or importance of the art that you are considering purchasing. Typically the purpose behind buying “decorative art” is to enhance and add character to your space by finding art that coordinates with the surrounding pieces. On the other hand, purchasing “fine art” for your space is usually based on a deeper connection or passion that you have for that particular work of art. In your situation I personally feel like it doesn’t matter one way or the other whether the art coordinates with the sofa or not if you’ve fallen completely head over heels for it. Although, I would opt against placing an extremely traditional piece of art in a room that’s a bit more modern or contemporary (and vice versa).

The piece that you want to buy doesn’t have to match per se but the style of the art that you’re investing in should reflect the overall style of the room. I hope this answers your question and settles the debate. Good luck!
