Who is Sarita and why should you care about what she has to say?  Sarita is an interior designer at Vastu.  Once a month we will check in with a Vastu designer to hear their thoughts on design, trends, tips, etc.  So, Sarita says…

Bring on the ART.

It’s all about the art for me lately. My time as a designer at Vastu has greatly influenced my appreciation and love of art. I am surrounded by amazingly beautiful original artwork every day. I can’t get enough, I love it! I’ve learned that art is a huge part of interior design and no space is complete without it. I’ve also learned along the way that a lot of people are intimidated by choosing art and instead they are living with blank white walls! This has to stop, so I’ve put together a list of helpful tips on choosing art for all you white wall people out there (you know who you are!).

1. Choosing art should be an exciting and enjoyable experience. Don’t be intimidated, if you buy what you love you are making the right choice.

2. There is no right or wrong, pick pieces that draw you in and speak to you.

3. When placing the pieces you buy in your home, pay attention to scale. A large wall space needs a large piece of art or a grouping of two or more pieces. A small piece will get lost on a large wall. This works the other way also.

4. When choosing multiple pieces for one space, try to have a connecting element, either color or theme that ties them together. If you have multiple framed pieces, make sure the frames are similar, keep them all the same color for a unified look.

5. Lastly, explore all of your available resources for purchasing art. There are so many resources today, whether you have thousands or hundreds of dollars to spend, it’s unbelievable! You can find really affordable and cool framed or canvas reproduction prints online or you can visit local galleries or retail stores that represent local and emerging artists for a mix of affordable and more expensive original art.

Follow these simple tips and say goodbye to those white walls for good! It’s easier than you think, and if you’ve found art that you love, but still need help with the rest of the space, let the art inspire you! You can pull colors out of the artwork to create a color palette for your space and once you have that, everything else will be so much easier.
