Hi!

I’ve neglected to really invest time in the decor of my studio apartment for the last year, but now I’m ready to make some changes.  I LOVE the hollywood glam, French boudoir kind of look, but I’m not sure how to pull it off in my small space.  I’ve attached images of spaces I really like.  Will this kind of design be too much for a studio?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Your concern is totally understandable. The “Hollywood Glam/French Boudoir” look can definitely overwhelm a small space if done wrong. The thing you need to keep in mind is that in a small space, less is more. You can still have the glam look that you want, but you have to keep it from becoming too much for the space to handle. In a small space, dark colors will tend to make the space feel smaller, so I would stay away from too many dark colors (like the first photo), and keep the color palette on the lighter side (like the second photo). The glam look is almost always an over-the-top, highly decorated, and ornamented style – everything is eye-catching and grand! For your space, I would recommend choosing one or two elements to be the focal-point, and keep everything else on the subdued side. Your small space can’t handle extravagant floor to ceiling drapes and walls in a deep Tiffany-blue shade AND loud patterns on the floor covering or upholstery – so choose one or the other.

By the way, the gorgeous x-form stool that is shown in the second image is the Barcelona stool, an iconic piece of modern furniture designed in 1929 by the famous architect, Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe. It has been in production since 1953, by Knoll, the original licensed manufacturer. The stool is available in over six hundred colors of leather. You can purchase it at Vastu, the DC-Metro area licensed Knoll retailer.

Good luck on your design project, I’m sure it will be fabulous!
