The Great Outdoors: A little piece of ‘Heaven’

March 27, 2009 · Posted in Outdoor furniture · 1 Comment

It’s a nice day here in the District, so our minds are wandering to the warmer days to come - time at the local pool, relaxing at the beach, restaurant outdoor seating…  How many more days until summer?

As we count down the days, we’re going to distract ourselves with all the new pieces from the amazing outdoor furniture company Emu.  An Italian-based company, Emu is an innovator when it comes to advanced technological processes for metal protection.  The company recently launched a number of new outdoor pieces and we’d like to share a few of them with you over the next couple weeks.

First is the ’Heaven’ collection – complete with dining chair, dining table, lounge chair, side table/ottoman and cocktail table.  The collection, designed by Jean-Marie Massaud, features a metal weave achieved through a unique process of weaving and welding.  This woven look “gives the furnishings and ethereal lightness and an extreme softness to the volume, making them almost intangible” – hence the name.  Check it out!

The Vastu team was represented in Friday’s Washington Post Express when staff member, Janelle Tracy, was featured in an article about painted furniture.  You may recognize the chair from one of our weekly Design Direction posts!

Look what we found! #2

Stumbling upon Cherie Lester’s work inspired us to check out what other mid-century inspired work we could find on Etsy.  Our second fun find comes from Nouveau Designs.  Their Bertoia chair series cards are great!

Inspired by the chairs designed by Harry Bertoia, the series of cards showcases three variations. Images were created by digitally manipulating photographs of the Diamond Chair, Bertoia Side Chair and Bertoia Bar Stool. Each chair is set against a bright, saturated background. The cards, printed on thick textured cardstock, are 4.25″ x 5.5″ when folded.

Great for personal notes or to gift to your mid-century-loving friend.

Places to go | Folks to know

One of our favorite neighborhood eateries – Simply Home – has reinvented itself.  Now DC Noodles, the newly designed restaurant offers a more casual dining experience, a new menu and more seating!  With over 40 noodle dishes, DC Noodles is still looking to add more noodle combinations.  Their noodle dishes are inspired by authentic Thai recipes. They say, “Thailand may not be known as ‘noodle country’ but when we think of food, we think noodles. Pad Thai anyone?”

As we consider it our duty to try all new restaurants, we are happy to report the DC Noodles is a delicious stop on U Street.  If you were a fan of Simply Home, you will love DC Noodles.

(This week’s Design Direction doesn’t have an accompanying photo).

Hello Designers – I just got married and instead of trying to merge furnishings, my husband and I decided to pitch the majority of what we had and start over.  I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the idea of designing a place from scratch.  How to suggest tackling a project like this?  Where do you start when the canvas is blank?  Thanks!!!

What do you think?
