Stu, stu, studio!

There’s nothing we love more than a challenge.  When we first learned of a client’s 325 square foot studio that needed to function as a place to sleep, work, entertain and incorporate storage we weren’t sure how we’d do it, but we were determined to make it work.  And we did!

Our first order of business was to tackle where our client would sleep.  He was interested in something more sleek than a futon, but still wanted the piece to function as seating during the day and as a bed at night.  Our solution was a custom daybed from upholsterer Steven Anthony.  We were able to create a platform bed that had an accompanying mattress cover made of the same material as the bed frame.  This way – with the help of some decorative pillows – the piece looked like a sofa and could then be turned down when our client was ready to sleep.

(L to R) For sitting, for sleeping

To address the need for work space, Vastu’s designer selected a small glass top table/desk and desk chair in an exotic wood finish.  The table surface also functions as the dining table.  The media credenza serves as the storage solution.  It not only holds TV components, but the left side of the credenza is used for laundry and the right side for linens.  To incorporate more seating, but keep the space open, the client and designer chose two (very comfortable) lounge chairs with a Saarinen side table.  To give the space a little more “pop”, the wall behind the bed was painted in Benjamin Moore’s ‘Meteorite Pearlescent’ – an acrylic based paint the produces a metallic effect.  We were pleased with the final result, but most importantly our client was very happy.
