Do you have a challenging space or need some design guidance? Design Direction is a chance for you to submit photos or videos of your design challenge(s) and a Vastu interior designer will provide you with some help. Every Wednesday we will feature one reader’s submission.

Hello – I’m looking for any advice you have for organizing the space where I keep my TV.  I want more storage, but I’m not sure it’s possible in such a small space.  The wall behind the TV is 42″ W.  Also, I am planning to get a flat panel mounted to the wall.

Thanks!

Well, you certainly have a challenging space to fit media and storage. Not to worry though, it can done. As you probably already know, there are not many media cabinets that are 42” wide or smaller out there. My recommendation for your space is a custom wall-mounted storage piece of either open shelving or a combination of open shelves and cabinets. You will be much happier with the look and functionality of a storage piece designed to fit specifically in your space than trying to find something narrow enough to fit that also has enough storage for your needs. With the custom piece you could mount your new flat panel television to the wall with the new shelves below, or with shelves above and cabinets below. Any combination is possible when designing a custom piece, so there are endless possibilities…just be sure to have the dimensions of your new television and all of your components when determining the depth and height of the shelves. At Vastu, our custom shelving & storage solution is the Plano system; you can see an example of a Plano media installation on our website by following the link below.
