This Year’s Hot Hues
Leaders of the color industry advisory groups have spoken and yellow and purple are said to be the hot colors for 2009 in both fashion and home furnishings.
Pantone, a provider of professional color standards for the design industries, has selected “mimosa” (Pantone 14-0848) as their color for the year. They report that “in a time of economic uncertainty and political change, optimism is paramount and no other color expresses hope and reassurance more than yellow.” The Color Marketing Group (CMG) has chosen colors influenced by both the economy and our outlook on the future. CMG, the leading international non-profit association of color design professionals, shares that purple is not a fad, but “an entrenched trend, strongly influenced by the election. (After all, red plus blue equals purple.)”

It can be difficult to find someone to trust with your thirty year old family photo or the artwork you picked up on a trip to Brazil. Here at Vastu we trust one person in particular with these kinds of valuable items and it’s Regina Miele. Regina is a custom framer who knows everything there is to know about framing – from the best materials to use to preserve your pieces to what frame finishes will bring your piece to life.
In addition to her amazing framing work, Regina is also a very talented painter. You can see her portfolio of work here. You can also visit her studio on Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. Inside the White House
We were pleasantly surprised by the announcement of Michael Smith as interior designer for the White House last week. Of all the names being thrown around as possible candidates (Nate Berkus or Darryl Carter) we didn’t hear much about Smith until late in the game. Known for balancing classic with modern, he seems to be a good fit for the White House private residences. Below are a few images of Smith’s work that you can find on his website. Now through mid-March, Vastu will be showing the works of two very intriguing artists – Rose Minetti and Don Griffin. Both artists present a rough, real style and each works on canvas and paper. Vastu has repeatedly featured refined and expressive works from artists across the country, and continues to do so.

One design trend we are happy made a comeback is wallpaper. With modern designs and finishes, today’s wallpaper can add elements of texture and drama to any space. Whether papering an entire room, or a single wall, the addition of a wall treatment can really make an impact.

At Vastu, we are a team of foodies. And by foodies we mean we love to eat. When neighborhood restaurant and wine bar, Cork, first opened our staff members were some of the first to try it out – and it was great! Cork offers a number of delicious small plate options and an amazing selection of wine. They don’t take reservations, but you can call ahead to put your name on a waiting list. You may still have to wait when you arrive, but the dining experience is well worth it. Open for dinner, Cork has a fun crowd, the atmosphere is casual and the prices are reasonable - an all around good time. If you haven’t yet had a taste of Cork, give it a try.
