Do you have a challenging space or need some design guidance? Design Direction is a chance for you to submit photos or videos of your design challenge(s) and a Vastu interior designer will provide you with some help. Every Wednesday we will feature one reader’s submission.

Hey,

I’ve been in my place for a while, but I want to make some changes to my living room.  I like my sectional, but I want the place to look more “finished”.  What should I do?

What do you think?

That sectional does look nice and very comfy too! Your living room is pretty spacious, considering that you have a very large sectional in there and still have all of that open space. I would recommend adding a side chair or two opposite the sectional. Adding chairs will complete the seating arrangement and allow you introduce another fabric, preferably with a pattern, that will contrast the brown sectional. I would also suggest adding some decorative throw pillows to the sofa.

Next – paint, paint, paint. Since it appears that most of the walls are window walls in your space, you can get away with doing a dark or bold color on the walls without windows. A nice warm neutral color would also be nice. You have a challenging space to paint, with a column in the corner and a bulkhead running around the perimeter of the room. You need to decide if you want to paint those features or leave them white. I suggest painting them, which will help them to disappear rather than stand out.

My last suggestion is to add some art on the walls. I can only see one possible spot for art in this photo (to the right of the window), but if there are more blank walls like that one, fill them up with something! Art not only warms up a space but it personalizes it too. Pick pieces or photos that you love and put them where you can see them and enjoy them every day.
