Express yourself
What do you want your space to say? The ability to express your personality in your home is very important when designing your space. It is also important that your workspace accurately reflect who you are, as many of us spend a lot of time there. If your personal environment does not serve as an extension of your personality, then that space won’t work for you. Are there areas of your home where you feel uncomfortable or even bored? Could someone take over your workspace and not have to change a thing?
Here are some tips on how to express yourself in your space:
- Think of a favorite area in your home or workspace – past or present. Does the decor reflect your interests, your tastes? It probably does. Determine what elements of that space make it feel uniquely your own and bring those same concepts to other spaces.
- Try adding painting, photographs, displays of objects from trips you’ve been on. These kinds of pieces will give your space an identity.
How do you make your space your own?

The owner of neighboring retailer, Home Rule, is a pioneer.
Our neighborhood is one with a lot of history. 14th Street is the old auto row of Washington that ran north from the center of the downtown business district into the mostly residential northern sections of DC. Our stretch of 14th ST NW was scarred and left forgotten by the riots of 1968 and the years of neglect that followed. But in 1999, Home Rule, a modern home goods store, opened it’s doors. In the beginning, Home Rule was a small store patroned by a few people. People in DC just weren’t looking for trendy home goods along the 14th Street corridor. But soon, word got out that someone had opened a little home store on 14th Street. Today, Home Rule is an anchor of the Midcity shopping district. We applaud them for being one of the first small businesses to have opened its doors back in 1999 and has since helped to recycle and rejuvenate this vital DC corridor. Hats off to a pioneer!
If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit Home Rule, it is worth the trip. Click here for information on how to get there.

People in glass houses…
…should buy really cool pendant fixtures.
For this open loft space, the clients wanted to create something modern, comfortable and dramatic. Realizing that their home could be seen from the street, they wanted to give the curious passerby a good show.

Food & Friends is a fantastic DC-based organization we have partnered with for the last couple years. The mission of Food & Friends is to foster a community caring for men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries in conjunction with nutrition counseling. Food & Friends was founded in 1988 when a friend of Reverend Carla Gorrell, sick at home with AIDS, needed something to eat. What began as lunch for one has become 3 meals a day, for more than 1,300 individuals, six days a week for people in the Washington, DC, metropolitan community.
We just wanted to take some time and thank Food & Friends for all the great work they do in our community. To learn more the organization, ways to donate or volunteer click here.
